Stop Asking "What is God's Will?" Ask This Instead!
Feb 27, 2025Have you ever found yourself staring at the ceiling at 2 AM, desperately whispering, "God, what do You want me to do with my life?" Friend, I've been there. That knot in your stomach when facing a major life decision—a new job, a relationship, a move across the country—and you're terrified of making the "wrong" choice.
I remember sitting in my car outside a church where I'd been offered a position, gripping the steering wheel until my knuckles turned white, begging God for a burning bush or skywriting angels—anything to tell me if this was "His will." Maybe you can relate?
A Compass, Not a Map
Here's the breakthrough that changed everything for me: God gives us a compass, not a Google Maps printout.
Think about it. When you're following turn-by-turn directions, you don't need to think—just obey the robotic voice. "Turn right in 500 feet." But is that really how God designed our relationship with Him to work?
The Westminster Catechism tells us that our chief purpose is "to glorify God and enjoy Him forever." That's your compass pointing true north! The details of how you get there? There's beautiful freedom in that journey.
Paul writes in Galatians 5:25, "Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit." Notice he doesn't say, "Let us get a complete life itinerary from the Spirit." It's about the next step, not the next twenty years.
The Joseph Myth
We love to preach about Joseph's amazing technicolor success story, don't we? The favored son who became Egypt's second-in-command! God's perfect will unfolding!
But wait—was it God's "perfect will" for Joseph to be thrown into a pit by his brothers? To be sold into slavery? To be falsely accused and imprisoned?
I doubt Joseph was thinking, "This is awesome! All part of God's perfect plan!" while sitting in that Egyptian dungeon.
Let's be real: God can redeem any situation, but that doesn't mean every painful circumstance is His direct intention. Sometimes God's will isn't a straight path to success but His faithful presence in our messy reality.
Start Where Your Feet Are
Can I challenge you with something? Before agonizing over God's will for your future, ask about His will for your today.
Are you honoring Him in your current relationships? Are you being faithful with what He's already entrusted to you? Are you pursuing Him with your whole heart right now?
I've counseled countless people tormented about "God's will" regarding a new job opportunity while they're currently miserable, dishonoring God, and disengaged at their current workplace. Let's not kid ourselves—if we can't follow Him faithfully here, what makes us think we'll suddenly start there?
Peace as Your Green Light
Jesus promises in John 14:27, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you... Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."
You know that feeling—when you're considering a choice, and despite all logical evidence pointing one way, there's an inexplicable peace drawing you in another direction? That's often the Holy Spirit's gentle nudging.
I once turned down a ministry position that offered double my salary and national platform because when I prayed about it, my spirit felt unsettled. Meanwhile, staying at my small-town church—where the challenges were real and the budget was tight—filled me with inexplicable peace. Ten years later, I can see how God has worked in ways I never could have orchestrated myself.
Your Daily Compass Check
Here's my challenge to you: Stop asking for the full map. Instead, each morning, pull out your compass:
- Point toward gratitude - Thank God for where you are right now
- Check your direction - Ask, "Am I honoring You in this moment?"
- Take the next step - Not the next twenty, just the next one
The more you practice living by the compass, the more naturally you'll sense which way is true north. The Holy Spirit becomes less like a mysterious force and more like a trusted friend walking beside you.
So friend, what's your next step today? Not your five-year plan—just today's faithful move in God's direction. That step, taken with peace and in fellowship with the Spirit, is God's will for your life right now.
What step is He inviting you to take?
